DRIFFIELD FIRM COMPLETES CASTLE HOWARD
RE-ROOFING PROJECT
A Driffield-based roofing specialist has just completed a project to re-roof a distinctive and historic property on the Castle Howard Estate in Yorkshire.
Dodds Roofing, based at the Kelleythorpe Industrial Estate, was commissioned to restore the roof of Swiss Cottage, one of more than 200 properties on the popular estate situated 15 miles north east of York.
The company’s managing director, Graham Dodds, said: “This was not your usual roofing job. We worked very closely with the client and Sandtoft, the clay tiles manufacturer, to re-roof the property in a very stylish and sensitive fashion and it was very satisfying to stand back and view the end result which we know will be seen by thousands of visitors to Castle Howard in the future.”
The design of the house was inspired by the Arts and Craft movement, which was developed in England during the second half of the 19th century. The steep pitched roof features a geometric pattern and had to be entirely replaced as the existing tiles had become severely weathered.
In addition to clay plain tiles, Dodds used arrow head feature tiles to meet the requirements of the local planning authority.
Graham Dodds said: “Recreating a geometric pattern is no easy task, but with the help of Sandtoft and its heritage service, we have succeeded in replicating the original design and restoring this character cottage back to its former glory.”
Dodds Roofing Services was established in 1995 and provides a specialist, professional roofing service throughout East, West and North Yorkshire. The company has achieved the ‘Investors in People’ standard and is a member of the Confederation of Roofing Contractors.
