Solar Energy
The UK Government has set out ambitious plans for all new homes to be zero carbon by 2016. It has defined a zero carbon home as “one that meets zero carbon for all energy use in the home" (net over a 12 month period). Energy used in the home includes the following: cooking, washing and electronic entertainment appliances as well as space heating, cooling, ventilation, lighting and hot water.
Based on a percentage ratio the aim is to improve standards by 150% over the present energy standards, this represent a huge step forward for the building industry. It is anticipated that the building fabric will only contribute to a 40% improvement over the existing standards, which is obviously some way short of the 150% requirement, which is where the re-newable energy sources step in and contribute towards the remaining 110% shortage.
|
What this means in real terms is, any energy used over the course of a 12 month period needs to be compensated by other renewable energy sources, such as solar electric panels, solar thermal panels etc.

How and what can Dodds Roofing Services Ltd do to help achieve this target?
It should not be unreasonable to expect renewable energy sources to be produced on site based on a time, effort and cost basis.
All possibilities need to be explored to bridge the 110% shortage but based on practicality and cost effectiveness the most logical solution to meet this need is by applying solar technology. Two types of solar technology is available on the market today.
